Our brains have been proven to be more plastic than science previously thought. It was thought that in our mid 20’s our brain was done developing and everything from there went down hill. Gradual loss of ability and brain cells dying to never be replaced were all our brains could do.

Recent research shows that brain cells can be activated and developed throughout our lives. Challenge and change are two elements the brain needs. What happens is that dormant cells can grow their dendrites and these dendrites reach out and make new connection. Whole sections of unutilized cells come to life and the activity is tracked with neuro-imaging.

This is great news because we can improve our brain function and improve our attitude at the same time. We can create a bright future and a better life by using our amazing brain.

Of course I think it should go without saying that good sleep and proper nutrition are essential but that is a different article.

Challenge can break up your routines and you can stretch by adding difficulty to your activities. Routines serve a function and research on productivity at work has shown that stability for a period of time increases productivity.


Use Your Mind, Don’t Lose It

After a period of stability making changes for a period of time increases productivity.

There is a time to settle down and a time to shake it up. Which one do you need today? If things are chaotic it may be time to settle in a bit. If things feel stale then it is to shake it up.

This is where intuition comes in handy. I have been in situations where it was chaotic and even though I wanted to settle things I knew hanging out in chaos a little longer would serve best outcome. The opposite has happened also. Things being calm and routine and I waited for the right cue to shake things up.

 

This is where a coach can help.

 

  • Here are a few suggestions of what you can do to shake it up a bit.

    • Go to work a new way

    • New exercise routine

    • Dance to new music

    • Funky projects

    • Do a skit

    • Read something different (outside comfort zone)

    • Learn a new language

    • Eat with your opposite hand

    • Listen instead of talking

    • Do puzzles (Sudoku is one of my favorites)

    • Do impersonations

    • Learn a new instrument

    • Eat new cuisine (Country you have not tried before)

    • Or go to that Country

    • Add some of your ideas to this list

    Research has shown with our brains that if you do not activate brain cells they become dormant.

    Have a better life by using your mind so that you don’t lose your mind.
