Simple Math to Maintain

Your Attitude in a Positive Way

There are things that you are doing everyday that bring you more happiness and satisfaction. Great! Keep doing them. Or in folk wisdom “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.

There are things you are not doing that would not add much to your life. Continue not doing them.

The invitation here is leave the previous categories alone and focus on the next two in order to have your attitude be more positive and worth catching.

Read this book to help your attitude be more positive.

Add something you are not doing that you know would add value, decrease stress and be a great addition for maintaining your attitude very positively. This is the plus one part of the equation. It can be something that you are not doing and want to do or it can be something you are already doing and need to do it more. For this exercise pick something that you can do everyday or at least several times a week.

  • This may include:

    • Exercising

    • Meditating

    • Eating healthy food

    • Listen to Great CD’s

    • Doing what you love more

    • Laughing with friends

    • Help others

    • Write articles

    • Play sports

    • Go to the gym

    • Do the next step for your business

    • Read good books

    • Play with kids or pets.

    • Hike

    • Dance

    • Clean

    • Organize

    • Garden

    • Spend time with loved ones

    • Encourage, Yourself and Others

Now make a commitment to add one of these into your life. Note how often you will do it and write it down so that you can check back. After you have added it for a while report what difference it is making in your life.

Next is the minus one part of the equation. Think about something that you do currently that if you did it less or not at all it would make a great difference in your life. You would be more joyful and less stressed if your let it go or did it less.

  • This may include

    • Whine and complain

    • Watch TV

    • Find fault

    • Eat junk food

    • Go to the track

    • Gamble

    • Discourage friends

    • Spend time with negative people

    • Stay up late and miss sleep

    • Drink too much alcohol, coffee, etc

    • Smoking, drugs

    • Be unsupportive

    • Avoid important conversations or tasks

    • Surf the Internet

    • Argue “with your spouse” or anyone else

    • Bite your nails

    • Think negatively

    • Doubting, Yourself and Others

Now you want to start with just one thing that you will add and one thing you will subtract. It is important that the list is short, very short, one thing to add and one to subtract. Write down both and

keep track of your progress for three weeks. If it is not yet set as a new habit then renew your commitment and work with it for another three weeks.

Plus one minus one is an effective way to start a new habit or to wean you off of old habits. Three weeks is the amount of time that is recommended for starting a new habit or breaking an old one. That is the general rule yet you can adjust it to your situation. Some things may need a little more time and commitment to release them or add them.

Do simple math and create a life with more passion and purpose. Oh yeah and they will help keep your attitude positive too.

Taking the Right Steps to

Keep Your Attitude Positive

Part of the daily journey we each experience is our thoughts about whatever we are involved with. Our thoughts form our attitudes. We choose which thoughts we support and reinforce and which ones we discard.

Great 4 CD Set to Help Turn Your Attitude Positive

When you notice your attitude and your thoughts are positive take steps to encourage and support your good attitude. When your thoughts and attitude are negative take simple steps to get back to a positive attitude. Use the following five steps as a guideline.

  1. Tell the truth to yourself. Are you positive and grateful? Build on that. Are you whining and complaining if so then the first step is be aware of and admit it. Your mindset, is not set, it can be changed.

  2. Choose a positive attitude and positive self-talk. A negative mindset or attitude is the result of previous choices. Make choices that create positive feelings and outcomes for you.

Choose A Positive Attitude

Globalize the positive and specify the negative. In the book Authentic Happiness Martin Seligman points out how when experiencing a negative pessimistic attitude a person says things like “bad things always happen to me there is nothing I can do about it”. An optimistic attitude in the same situation might say, ”negative things rarely happen to me maybe I was not prepared”.

In a positive situation the pessimist would say “everybody gets lucky sometimes.” The optimist says, “Good things happen to me all the time, it’s normal”.

  1. Reinforce your positive attitude actions. That may include talking to
people that support your a behavior change. Using affimationsReinforcing that new choice is to affirm in you mind that you trust yourself and the universe to support you.

  2. Express gratitude for yourself and the opportunity. Acknowledge yourself for making positive choices.

A friend recently told me how this helped her in the Grand Canyon. Before the trip she was nervous and read things about the trail being challenging and made herself crazy. Saying things like, I have not backpacked in a while, this will be hard and I do not know if I can do it. She piled up negative thoughts.

Use this to turn your Attitude Positive

While on the hike she continued her negative thought and was getting tenser. Then she noticed how negative she was. She was reminded that she had a choice. She was quickly able to make a different choice that immediately relieved anxiety.

She made a new choice that she was going to be fine. She thought how much she was enjoying the company of her friend on this hike. She thought of how grateful she was and thanked the spirit in general for this great experience and what it helped her to learn about her attitude.

The rest of the trip went great. The trail had not changed but how she saw it was completely different. She had a good attitude and was having fun.

I encourage you to make optimistic positive choices and enjoy the journey.
